Making the Most of Summer

School’s out—but your well-being is still in session.

After months of giving your time, heart, and energy to your students and school community, summer is your chance to pause and reconnect with yourself. Before the back-to-school planning kicks in, take time to rest, reflect, and refill your cup.

Here are five simple, meaningful ways to care for yourself this summer:

1. Set Boundaries Around Work

It’s tempting to start prepping for the fall, but give yourself permission to take a break. Designate specific days or weeks to not check school email or lesson plans. Protecting this time for rest helps you return with clarity and purpose.

2. Get Outside (Even Just a Little)

Nature has a way of grounding us. Whether it’s a morning walk, sitting with your coffee on the porch, or a full-day hike, time outdoors can reset your body and mind. No pressure—just fresh air and a change of scenery.

3. Reclaim Your Hobbies

What brings you joy outside the classroom? Reading for pleasure, gardening, crafting, cooking just for fun—summer is a great time to revisit or rediscover what makes you feel like you again.

4. Prioritize Rest Without Guilt

Sleep in. Nap. Do nothing for a while. It’s not laziness—it’s healing. You spend the school year moving at full speed. Slowing down now isn’t indulgent—it’s necessary.

5. Connect With People Who Recharge You

Whether it’s family, friends, or fellow educators who just get it, lean into relationships that fill you up. Laughter, real conversation, and shared downtime can make a big difference.

This summer, let your focus be on you. Not because there’s a to-do list attached—but because you deserve a season that restores your energy and reminds you who you are, beyond the role of teacher.

Enjoy every bit of it. You’ve more than earned it.
