CALIFORNIA SCHOOLS TO WATCH

Staff participates in weekly PLC’s to analyze data, track student progress, and discuss best practices. In addition, every six weeks, staff holds “Data Reflection Sessions” to analyze student work and review results of common assessments.

Math teachers have participated for three years in Math Solutions training supported by three district math coaches who attended all PLC sessions, provided demonstration lessons, supported peer observations, and facilitated lesson study sessions.

Language arts and social studies teachers at Lakeside have focused on academic language development for EL students which included “shadowing” students to collect data on verbal interactions.

Lakeside’s “Period One Intervention” program provides targeted, flexible, systemic interventions for all students. Students are grouped for proficiency and participate in math and English on an A/B schedule. Students can also access lunch and after school tutoring.

Seventh and eighth grade social studies teachers have been trained in and implemented “Project Based Learning” as a strategy to develop 21st Century skills.

STEM education is addressed by offering a period one enrichment class, an after-school club, and through a variety of school-wide challenges. In addition, students are encouraged to participate in MESA and Science Olympiad competitions.

Response to community needs, Lakeside offers parent education programs such as Family Literacy Night, Family Math Night, Family STEM night ad a Community Resource Expo as well as Computer Education and Social Development of Adolescents.

Mobile Chromebook carts in every core classroom facilitate student access to technology in instruction.

Utilizing Kate Kinsella’s Professional Learning Activities from the Taking Center Stage CDE site, teachers engaged in highly structured peer observations resulting in specific feedback regarding the interactions of EL students.

Lakeside provides a well-developed, robust program for EL students using the AVID Excel program for Long Term English Learners providing support in the development of academic language, leadership skills, academic language and a commitment to college readiness goals.
