Sean Mikkelsen
Santiago Charter Middle School
For twenty-five years, Sean Mikkelsen has been a steady force of excellence, empathy, and innovation. As a physical education teacher, he goes far beyond building fitness skills—he helps shape a culture rooted in confidence, connection, and compassion.
Two years ago, Sean launched a Unified PE Program in partnership with the Orange County Department of Education and SELPA, pairing students with moderate to severe disabilities with general education mentors. What began as a thoughtful effort to expand access has grown into a model program replicated across the county. His work has positioned the school as a leader in inclusive education and created a powerful blueprint for belonging through teamwork and movement.
The impact on campus has been transformative. Students with disabilities are more connected and visible within the school community, while mentors develop leadership, empathy, and responsibility. Sean’s intentional design ensures every student feels valued, supported, and capable of growth.
A respected colleague and mentor, Sean collaborates with staff to expand inclusive practices into additional programs. In his classes, he celebrates effort over outcome and growth over perfection, motivating students of all abilities to build resilience and self-confidence.
Through visionary leadership and genuine care for students, Sean has elevated physical education into a cornerstone of equity and community. He exemplifies dedication, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to the middle school learner.
